Often times, when I listen to my favorite old Bollywood songs, I like to follow along with lyrics. Don’t ask me why, maybe because words, especially those arranged beautifully, have a special place in my heart. I constantly marvel at the talent and hard work the lyricists of yesteryear put into their work. When I was younger, I used to do a similar thing with Shakespeare’s radio plays on BBC – as the play went on on our old tabletop GEC receiver, I used to plop down on the floor in front of the radio set with a copy of the bard’s “Complete Works” and follow the audio line by line. Old habits and all that, I guess.

To fast forward, the other day, I was listening to the melody you all know from Hum Dono – ‘abhi na jao chhoD kar‘ online. But when I googled for the lyrics, I had a real hard time. Not one good hit! Frustrated, I decided to try to fill the gap myself. Additionally, I thought it would be good exercise for me to practice typewritten Urdu, which I had started learning lately.

So, here are the lyrics that I typed up (thanks Google!) as I listened to the song on. I am quite sure there will be many errors because I cannot readily distinguish some similar-sounding Urdu alphabet (huroof?). If you find errors and would be so kind, please let me know the mistakes in the comments area.
(I will follow up with lyrics for the song in Hindi later on, but those are aplenty online).
